What does the Klout update mean to you?

You have most likely noticed a drop in your Klout score lately. I have to be honest and I am not really that obsessed with my Klout score so I did not really notice. Or is it the fact that my Klout score is so low that I am slightly ashamed of it? I do not know.

The fact is that Klout update hurt a lot of people. Why? It seriously downgraded a lot of people with high Klout score. My best guess is that all Klout users got downgraded a percentage, and those with high score felt it more simply because they lost more points.

A long list of bloggers wrote really articles that have been in between disappointed all the way to upset and angry with the Klout update. Here is why I think it is really not worth getting to involved actually.

Klout (updated) is a bit like a new iPhone 4S

But beware of one thing. Klout is a piece of code sitting on some server. Like a piece of code that is in your iPhone. It does great things. As people who designed converted their great ideas into a great product.

But developers are developers. Your new super trooper iPhone 4S is leaking battery juice like mad. Because someone made a simple mistake in the code somewhere. Great product otherwise. Same is Klout. The great idea, and the product almost follows it. Until it starts leaking the re-tweets. As unimportant measurement. Yeah right…

Currently iPhone 4s battery lasts shorter than the iPhone 4 battery. A few years older technology (and we know what it means in IT) – and the new one simply does not deliver. Same is Klout. We accepted it because it brought some measurement in the social activity. The current version is worse than the last. That is normal in the IT world. The next one will (maybe) be better. Or someone else will do a better product before Klout gets its product back on track. And we will have a new and better social media measurement tool. And Klout simply bites the dust.
